Marlena is a 20-year-old resident of New Bedford, and the 59th young woman to wear the crown. Marlena received a $3000 scholarship, which she plans to use to return to school. An accomplished vocalist, she has won numerous vocal competitions, and was named the first New Bedford Idol winner in 2009. Marlena is an honors graduate of New Bedford High School and is excited to continue on in her scholastic endeavors. She currently is employed by New Bedford Public Schools working for McKinney Vento as the Homeless Education Support/Data Specialist. This position helps to secure the educational continuity of New Bedford’s unaccompanied and homeless youth. During her year of service, Marlena is working closely with New Bedford Public School’s initiative “Where are YOU Headed?” which focuses on three key factors to success: attending school, staying in school, and graduating.
